What are sodium-ion batteries – and how do they work?
Imagine a battery based on one of Earth’s most abundant elements: sodium. Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) work similarly to lithium-ion batteries – with an anode, cathode, and electrolyte. During charging, tiny sodium ions move into the anode; during discharging, they flow back to the cathode. This invisible dance of ions creates electric energy – reliably, cleanly, and rechargeable.

What is the difference between sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries?
The key difference lies at the heart of the battery: the raw materials. Instead of using rare and expensive lithium, sodium is used – a resource that is practically unlimited, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly to extract. This makes sodium-ion technology a real opportunity for sustainable energy storage without the downsides of lithium mining.

Are sodium-ion batteries really safe?
Yes – and you can feel good about it. Sodium-ion batteries are considered especially safe because they carry a significantly lower risk of overheating or exploding. Sodium is non-toxic and less reactive than lithium, which makes the batteries more stable in everyday use, during storage, and in operation. That means: more safety for your home and your business.

What are the disadvantages of sodium-ion batteries compared to lithium-ion?
The only downside: sodium-ion batteries have slightly lower energy density. That means they store a bit less energy than lithium systems at the same weight. However, for stationary use – such as home storage or commercial systems – this is hardly a drawback. Here, safety, sustainability, and cost stability are what truly matter.
